During an appendectomy, an incision two to three inches in length is made through the skin and the layers of the abdominal wall over the area of the appendix. Many women who develop the condition during pregnancy do not experience the common signs of appendicitis. If the appendix lies entirely within the pelvis, there is usually complete absence of abdominal rigidity.
Do not use laxatives, antibiotics, or pain medications because these may cause delay in diagnosis that increases the risk of rupture of the appendix or mask the symptoms, which makes diagnosis more difficult. Appendicitis pain usually begins near the belly button, then eventually moves to the lower right abdomen. Appendicitis is one of the most common causes of emergency abdominal surgery.
