Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, is an emerging infectious disease caused by at least three species of bacteria belonging to the genus Borrelia. Lyme disease symptoms include:
• Lack of energy, which is the most common symptom.
• Headache and stiff neck.
• Fever and chills.
• Muscle and joint pain.
• Swollen lymph nodes.
The disease has been reported in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, North Central, and Pacific coastal regions of the United States (see map) and in Europe, where it was first described almost 100 years ago. In some cases the presence of bacteria in organs such as the heart has only been found after autopsy and may have played a role in the cause of a patient’s death due to long-term damage going undetected.
