The most common way you catch pneumonia is to aspirate bacteria from your upper airway, usually your oral cavity. Signs of pneumonia caused by a virus usually go on for several days to a few weeks before you call your doctor. Most people who develop pneumonia initially have symptoms of a cold (upper respiratory infection, for example, sneezing, sore throat, cough), which are then followed by a high fever (sometimes as high as 104 F), shaking chills, and a cough with sputum production.
Pneumococcal pneumonia mainly causes illness in children younger than 2 years old and adults 65 years of age or older. Pneumonia is typically caused by an infection but there are a number of other causes. Pneumonia and other lower respiratory tract infections are the leading causes of death worldwide.
